The more experienced I have become as a wedding photographer, the more and more I have thought about why it is I do what I do. Was photography chosen for me or did I choose it? At the beginning of my photography career I was caught up in where this exciting new adventure was taking me, I rarely stopped to take it all in and question. I loved photography and was following my dream. The beauty and joy of each new wedding carried me on to the crest of the next wedding, each one as precious as the next.
More recently however, I have made a promise to myself to be more present in life’s moments. There was a realisation that you need to live life in the moment and with those you share it with. And it suddenly dawned on me why I found wedding photography- getting to share in the most precious moments in a couples life – their wedding, is a pretty amazing thing to be able to do for a living.
I value my own family deeply, more than my writing on this page can do justice to. Wedding photography as with any career can take me away from them for a considerable period. Knowing that I am welcomed so warmly into the lives of the couple’s and the families I photograph, goes a long way towards making up for it.
A wise person once told me that when they leave their families behind for long days or even nights the work they were doing really has to be worth it. I totally get that now and believe it is a real test of whether you are doing what you are really meant to be doing. A real litmus test of your purpose and whether you are living a purposeful life.
Im glad I have asked these challenging questions of myself. How else do we grow without a chance to step back and look at our lives! I don’t mean to be too philosophical here! Look at it as a chance to fully experience s moment that would otherwise fly past like a shooting star. The essence of a wedding day, if you will. I decided to live the adventure and appreciate everything that this wonderful world of wedding photography has afforded me – now that is what I am meant to do.
